Jigsawing the IB External Asessment

April 30, 2009

The class has three papers to chew on in 2 hours.
That is, 3 major perspectives(The Biological, Learning and Humanistic Perspectives)in Paper 1, one option(The Psychodynamic Psychology)for paper 2 and one question(Qualitative Research)for Paper 3.

The class of 11 is divided in three groups comprising of four students per table and three students on one odd table.

The topics (exam question guides) were divided amongst themselves where each member is in-charge to learn one question.

For example: Table 1, members A, B, C and D.

Member A (the reporter/presenter) will do his/her share of the research/revision and prepare an organized notes/hand-out or pointers to bring back to his/her table for presentation. Member A will explain it to his/her group and give his/her group the exam pointers s/he prepared. Member A will also try to evaluate and critically analyse the content for his/her group.

Then the Member A's groupmates will contribute information to the reporter's presentation and as a table (1) brainstorm on coming up with the best possible concise content plus its organization and presentation.

A secretary will be assigned by the group to record the brainstormed ideas.

A moderator will be assigned to facilitate the brainstorming.

They thank each other at the end of each question (That is after the reporter's presentation and analysis of the question AND after everyone's brainstorming.) Everyone's contribution will be acknowledge by the members of each group.

If the group is satisfied with the answer to the first question that Member A prepared for and the group's brainstorming, the group moves on to the next reporter
(member B)of his/her presentation of the next question(the question assigned to him/her).

This goes on until all 5 questions are answered.

Everyone is regrouped to a new group with different group members. Each member in that new group will be assigned to share his/her former group's summary in one question and the next member of the new group presents the summary the next question of his/her old group's summary and so on...A secretary and a moderator will be assigned as usual. They will thank each other at the end of their group's activity.

The members will again be re-assigned to a new group with new members and then reflect on the whole zigsaw process. A secretary and a moderator will be assigned as usual. They will thank each other at the end of their group's activity.

The last regrouping will be on meta-reflection. That is, reflecting on the process of reflection across groups.A secretary and a moderator will be assigned as usual. They will thank each other at the end of their group's activity.

Each group may ask for their teacher's assistance at any stage of any activity.
